The Irregular Guide to Melbourne

SS 18 Prints (1)

If you love good food, great coffee and fantastic shopping, you will fall head over heels (pun intended) for Melbourne! This vibrant and quirky city is the perfect home for our first Australian store! Our magnificent and friendly Melbourne team can't wait to share all of their favourite hidden cafes, bars and street art with you!

What hotels/accommodation offer the most uplifting stay?

The art series hotels are world class and each totally unique. They take inspiration from famous Australian artists such as The Cullen (Adam Cullen) The Olsen (John Olsen) and The Blackman (Charles Blackman).

Or why not scroll through Air BnB to find something unique, authentic and in the thick of Melbourne life.

Where do you go for a yummy breakfast?

We are spoilt for choice in Melbourne! Brunch culture is a huge part of our identity. You can’t walk 50 meters without stumbling on a “smashed avo”, the perfect latte and an all day big breaky.

CBD: Try one of the buzzing cafes on Degraves St for the full Melbourne laneway experience and some great people watching.

Little further out: Venturing a little further out will reward you with the best brunch gems! Head to Fitzroy (Industry Beans), Richmond (Feast of Merit), South Yarra (Abacus), North Melbourne (Auction Rooms), Collingwood (Proud Mary) and Northcote (Poke the Bear) and thank us later!

Most quirky coffee shop?

Be sure to try Brother Baba Budan in the central business district for some amazing coffee and truly unique décor (seats on the ceiling anyone?).

Ever wanted to have a coffee and some lunch served from a laneway Caravan? Chuckle Park is just around the corner from our sparkly new Melbourne store and it serves up some delicious sandwiches, coffee and drinks, in the cutest outdoor space you're likely to find.

Or why not have a coffee at Abbotsford convent? Then head down the Merri trail for another coffee and a cuddle with a baby animal at the Collingwood Children's Farm!

Most amazing flavours of Icecream?

Melbourne's blessed with lots of sunshine and a multicultural community, which means lots of delicious ice cream from all over the world! Be sure to try Gelato Messina which can be found in Fitzroy, Richmond, and Windsor. They are known for their delicious signature flavours as well as their wacky 5 weekly specials which in the past have included 'Just Waiting for a Mate' (Wild Turkey and Raisin), 'Morning Glory' (Milk gelato, cornflakes and Milo) and 'Pablo Pistachio' (Pistachio gelato, white chocolate mousse and raspberry puree).

What's the most irregular place to go to eat?

How about on top of a building in a deregistered train carriage! If that sounds like you then head to Easey’s in Collingwood. It’s well worth the climb.

But the ultimate Melbourne treat? Head to Bunnings on a Saturday morning and grab yourself a snag with dead horse. Otherwise known as a barbequed sausage in bread with tomato sauce! Essential.

What do you consider your most beautiful street?

Melbourne is known for our alleyways and arcades. The most beautiful of which can be found in the very centre of the city. Start at Degraves street, head down Centre Place, through the famous Block Arcade and finish with the show-stopping Royal Arcade.

For those looking for the more artistic streets, be sure to check out Hozier Lane for the world famous street art.

Where do you wander to get inspired?

The back streets of Melbourne’s inner suburbs are full of street art, interesting houses and quirky bars and cafes. Head off the main streets and start wandering. Well worth it.

Where to go to experience your culture first hand?

The National Gallery of Victoria has an amazing permanent collection of Australian and International works, as well as seasonal exhibitions, that are well worth a look. A highlight is the Winter Masterpiece Exhibition which changes each year and often features late night and even all-night sessions. Great way to get out of the house in the colder months.

In the warmer months there are always street festivals and parties celebrating the multicultural identity of the city. Moomba, St Kilda Festival and Johnston Street Festival are always worth a visit.

Best park to see colourful flowers?

The Royal Botanic Gardens are just out of the CBD but will make you feel like you’re in another world. Beautiful lawns for lazing about, shady trees and lots of seasonal colourful flowers. Heaven!

Be sure to also check out Fitzroy Gardens, Alexandra Gardens, Flagstaff Garden and Carlton Garden.

Most fun to have with kids?

Melbourne Museum is always heaps of fun. Or try Melbourne Aquarium or the Melbourne Zoo for a bit of Nature. For some informative fun try Scienceworks in Spotswood. Definitely more fun than it sounds.

Where to dance like nobody's watching?

Well, where do we start? Yah Yahs in Fitzroy is known to belt out some classic tunes into the wee hours of the morning.

If you’re not ready to go home head to Revolver in Prahran to keep the party going well into the next morning.

What area would you say an Irregular girl would love to shop in?

Melbourne has some great quirky designers! Head down Gertrude Street in Fitzroy then head down Smith Street or Brunswick Street and enjoy some great vintage shops and Melbourne classics like Gorman, Kinky Gerlinki and Obus.

Any more Irregular insights you would like to share….

Be sure to visit some of Melbourne’s famous laneway cocktail bars. There are some great gems hidden in the middle of the city like Cabinet Bar & Balcony, Union Electric, Croft Institute and Sister Bella. Be sure to also visit the iconic Curtin House which features 7 floors of fun including Melbourne institutions Cookie, The Toff in Town and Rooftop Bar. There is something for everyone in there!

And be sure to venture a little further out. Melbourne is home to some of the best cocktail makers in the world. Be sure to try the Everleigh and Black Pearl in Fitzroy. And don’t forget a visit to Naked in the Sky for a truly spectacular view (you may even spot the IC Melbourne HQ from up there…).

Most of all, eat everything, drink everything and dress as loud as you like! All black is a myth, Melbourne is about vibrant colour and people so enjoy!
